We have been learning all about the life cycle of the butterfly in Junior Infants.
A few weeks ago we had a very exciting delivery to our classroom- 5 tiny caterpillars for us to take care of! We watched them every day as they grew bigger and bigger and eventually turned into chrysalis. When we came back into school after the bank holiday we found that 5 beautiful butterflies had emerged from their chrysalis. We looked after them in our classroom for a few days, giving them pieces of fruit and some sugar water to feed on while their wings straightened out and got a little stronger.
On Wednesday, we said goodbye to our butterflies, and released them onto some wildflowers in the meadow at the edge of the football pitch. Some of the butterflies fluttered away, some stayed around for a little while to show off their lovely colours and some even landed on us! We were sad to say goodbye to them but we keep a close eye out when we are on yard to see if they pop back for a visit and to say hello to all their special friends in Junior Infants! Have a look at some of the beautiful drawings we made of our butterflies!
