The strand units of the Outdoor and Adventure curriculum include:
- – Walking – Orienteering – Outdoor Challenges
These activities help to develop appreciation and enjoyment of the great outdoors. They also help children foster a healthy attitude to the environment around them. The activities are team-orientated and develop social skills. Some involve map-reading and problem-solving, coming to group decisions, developing leadership qualities and taking calculated risks.
This year we have really put an emphasis on developing this strand. Mr. Brennan has been busy hanging wildlife pictures throughout the school grounds and Ms. Ryan has added codes to each of the pictures so that class teachers can use the pictures to create an animal trail and various activities that involve following a simple map plan. These activities are not only getting the children out and about but they are also teaching them about the various animals and birds native to Ireland. Class teachers have been busy collaborating and coming up with all sorts of challenges using these new resources. Our Outdoor and Adventure Strand begins in May so we will have photos coming soon…
First Class completed their first adventure trail in Mr. Brennan’s Garden. They had to find each animal on their worksheet and write the description that was displayed on each picture. The children absolutely loved this activity and they really enjoyed working in pairs to complete the challenge! They also learned the names of where the various animals live.
